July 27, 2023 -- A former newspaper reporter who most recently served as spokesperson for Long Beach Utilities has been hired as the City's communications and public information manager.

Lauren Gold Howland was tapped by City Manager David White to "manage the comprehensive dissemination of information to the public and staff" starting August 14, City officials announced Wednesday.

Howland will provide information on City programs, initiatives and events and will serve as the City’s official spokesperson, officials said.

"We’re excited for Lauren to hit the ground running and build upon the work done by the communications team," White said.

"Her background and depth of experience will serve her well in implementing a robust program to keep our community informed of all things Santa Monica."

Howland brings nearly a decade's experience in communications for local government, serving most most recently as the public information officer for Long Beach Utilities.

There she "managed the public affairs and graphic design team, served as primary spokesperson, developed and implemented crisis communications strategies and led Long Beach Utilities’ rebranding effort," City officials said.

Howland previously served as communications specialist for the City of Anaheim and public information officer for the City of San Gabriel after working as a reporter for the Pasadena Star-News.

As a reporter Howland -- who is bilingual in English and Spanish -- covered city government, human interest and breaking news in Pasadena and other San Gabriel Valley cities.

Howland will serve in the City Manager’s Office, Office of Communications, with an annual salary of $161,316.

"It's an exciting time to join the City of Santa Monica, and I'm thrilled to become part of the team," Howland said.

"I look forward to bringing my experience, leadership and strategic direction to the communications team, building on the strong foundation that has been established to engage and inform residents, businesses and visitors."
