January 24, 2023 -- The driver of an SUV involved in a traffic collision in Downtown Santa Monica on Tuesday shot and injured the man in the other car, shutting down traffic in the busy area, police said.

Officers were flagged down at around 3:42 p.m. by an individual reporting shots fired at 6th Street and Broadway, police said.

"Officers located two vehicles involved in a collision and one victim with a gunshot wound to the shoulder," said Lt. Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesman.

Witnesses told police the driver exited the SUV involved in the collision "and shot at the other car," Flores said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening wound, he said.

Police have not determined a motive, but it appears the two men involved in the collision knew each other, Flores said.

Officers took the shooter into custody and recovered the gun, he said.

The investigation is ongoing.
