September 10, 2021 -- Police are searching for one of two suspects wanted for armed robbery, carjacking and kidnapping at a Santa Monica restaurant shortly after midnight Friday.
The incident began when officers responded to an armed robbery report at La Condessa Restaurant, 1519 Wilshire Boulevard, at 12:35 a.m., police said.
Based on information provided to detectives, it appears one of the men "tried to rob a valet," said Lt. Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesman.
The suspects then carjacked "a lady who maybe was a patron of the business" and drove with her around the block with a handgun, Flores said.
"When officers arrived on scene, they spotted the suspects fleeing in another vehicle at a high rate of speed," he said.
The vehicle subsequently crashed at the intersection of 26th Street and Wilshire Boulevard, and both suspects fled on foot, Flores said.
SMPD Officers quickly established a perimeter and SMPD "coordinated a search with the assistance of officers from the Beverley Hills and Santa Monica College Police Departments, along with SMPD K9s and the Drone Team (UAS)."
The department "had a hard time getting helicopters because of the rain," Flores said.
Officers located one of the suspects, identified as Steve Bryan Brown, a 21-year-old male from Anaheim, along with a Smith and Wesson loaded 9mm handgun.
Brown was taken into custody without incident and booked for robbery, carjacking and kidnapping.
The second suspect, who remains outstanding, is described as a Black male approximately 25-30-years-old, 5’9” to 6’0” tall and weighing 150 to 185 pounds, police said. He was wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with more information pertaining to this incident or the outstanding suspect should call the Criminal Investigations Division at 310-458-8451 or the Santa Monica Department’s Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-8427.
