September 16, 2020 -- A man jumped to his death from the third floor of Santa Monica Place Wednesday morning, marking the fifth public suicide in the beach city this year.

Surveillance video shows the victim jumping from the upper level of the outdoor mall at around 10:35 a.m., police said.

His body was located in the center court of the mall, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was by himself when he jumped, said Capt. Candice Cobarrubias. No foul play is suspected.

The death marks the 13th public suicide in Santa Monica since February 2018.

Five of the suicides were committed by leaping from Downtown Public Parking Structures and three were committed at the Santa Monica Pier, according to data from the coroner's office.

Five of the suicides have taken place this year, including one committed by using a handgun and another by walking in front of an oncoming train.

On January 26, 57-year-old Derrel Burnett Jr., who police believe was homeless, walked in front of an Expo train near the intersection of Lincoln Boulevard and Colorado Avenue ("Fatal Collision with Train Marks Ninth Public Suicide in Two Years," January 29, 2020).

One week later, a man committed suicide by leaping from the roof of Downtown Parking Structure 2 at 1235 2nd Street ("Man Commits Fifth Suicide By Leaping from Downtown Parking Structure," February 3, 2020).

On June 22, Jason Alexander, a 38-year-old hypnotherapist, shot himself with a handgun in Virginia Avenue Park ("Body Found in Park Was 11th Public Suicide in Santa Monica in Two and a Half Years," June 26, 2020 ).

Less than two weeks later, Lucius DeShawn Wade, a 34-year-old homeless man, jumped to his death from a freeway overpass on the Fourth of July ("Homeless Man Commits Suicide from Santa Monica Freeway Overpass," July 6, 2020).
