Santa Monica Sports Notes The high school baseball team began over the weekend. New Roads of Santa Monica lost a non-league game to Serra, 8-1... Former St. Monica High star Steve Hubbell had a double and drove in two runs for El Camino College in a 15-7 victory over LACC in South Coast Conference opening game. Overall El Camino is 7-8 and also features former St. Monica High pitching star Billy Johnson... The Spring 1, 2001 Team Tennis season began at Reed Park in Santa Monica last week and will continue through April 21. Matches are played on Saturday morning. Team Tennis is a long-term project of The Tennis Patrons of Santa Monica. Boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 17 are welcome regardless of skill level... A Youth Volleyball League similar to Little League baseball or AYSO tennis will be offered in Santa Monica this spring to youths 8 to 14. Registration is open until March 16. Crossroads Wins CIF Championship By Mitch Chortkoff Crossroads was the defending CIF Division 4-A boys basketball champion and left no doubt about its superiority Saturday with a 60-39 victory over St. Monica in the division championship game. The matchup of Santa Monica schools was played at the Pond in Anaheim as part of an all-day high school playoff extravaganza. Crossroads will go on to the state tournament, with pairings to be determined early this week. If Crossroads can win two more games it will reach the State Southern Finals Saturday. The difference in the game was the presence of Isaiah Fox, the 6-10 Crossroads center who has signed to play at Arizona next season. He produced 20 points and 19 rebounds in a dominating performance. Fox had some poor games the last few years. In one this season he scored just four points. But the talent is there and when needed in a big game he usually comes through. Coach Daryl Roper has worked well with him, even emphasizing Fox' away-from-the-basket skills at times. Next season Lute Olson inherits the task of continuing to improve Fox' game. Crossroads clinched the victory by going on a 15-7 run late in the game. Forward Marcus Shelby led St. Monica with 13 points. Crossroads, the Delphic League champion, has a 22-5 record. St. Monica, the Camino Real League runnerup, finished 21-8. It was a good year for St. Monica. The girls, coached by Michelle Rice, reached the CIF Semis before losing to St. Bernard. The boys finished ahead of everyone but Verbum Dei in league play and went further in the CIF Tournament than last year. Sean Cole, the star St. Monica center, ended a brilliant high school career and is deciding on a college. Most recently he has favored Missouri and Texas A&M. It was a bettter year for Crossroads, which began playing in the new Grisanti Gym after wandering around town using different sites for home games. The school has had some great players, including current NBA stars Austin Croshere and Baron Davis. None of them played in a campus gym. The Crossroads girls showed improvement with former Roadrunner star Sharisse Smith coming back to do the coaching. In a fine year for local high school basketball Santa Monica High also reached the CIF playoffs but lost in the first round. |
