September 24, 2026 – The on and off ramps that connect Moomat Ahiko Way and Pacific Coast Highway are expected to be closed for two months starting Monday as part of a major project to replace the Santa Monica Pier Bridge.
The closure paves the way for the demolition of the final, and largest, portion of the old Pier bridge since the start of the $35.6 million project, City officials said. The demolition will be followed by construction of the new bridge columns.
Motorists traveling southbound on PCH will be directed to either exit at the California Incline or continue on eastbound I-10 to Lincoln Boulevard. Motorists wanting to access PCH from Ocean Avenue should continue northbound to the California Incline. For a detour map click HERE
"The Santa Monica Pier will remain open throughout the closure, including all restaurants, shops, attractions, businesses and amenities," City officials said. "Visitors can continue to access the Pier by following posted signage directing to alternate routes and parking facilities.
"Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time while traveling to and from the Pier during the temporary closure," officials said.
Replacement of the nearly 87-year-old bridge is expected to be completed in December 2027, with the rehabilitated Pier sign -- which will have a vertical clearance of 17 feet -- installed about 10 feet north of its current location.
The new structure, which meets modern seismic and safety standards, will be wider than the existing bridge and will maintain one traffic lane in each direction, while expanding walkways and adding new lighting and railing.
The project is expected to be completed "well ahead" of the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and have a service life of 75 years, officials said.
