July 31, 2026 – Santa Monica residents Tuesday evening will join 38 million neighbors in 17,000 communities for National Night Out, an annual event promoting police-community relationships.

The free event -- which takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. outside City Hall – invites residents, families, businesses and visitors to join the Police Department for a free evening featuring the movie-inspired theme, "Lights. Camera. Community."

The event "dedicated to strengthening neighborhood relationships, building trust, and celebrating the community we serve" has been held since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

"Public safety begins with relationships," said Chief Darrick Jacob. "National Night Out is an opportunity to meet your officers, connect with your neighbors, and strengthen the partnerships that help make Santa Monica a safer and more resilient community.

"We look forward to welcoming everyone for an evening of conversation, learning, and fun."

National Night Out's family-friendly activities include police vehicle displays, meet-and-greets with officers and professional staff and opportunities to explore specialized police equipment and programs.

There will also be food, entertainment and giveaways, interactive games and activities for children and community resource booths, as well as crime prevention and emergency preparedness information.

"Whether meeting an officer for the first time, exploring a police motorcycle or patrol vehicle, collecting officer autographs in a special kids' autograph book, or learning more about public safety programs, there will be something for everyone to enjoy," police officials said.
