January 21, 2026 -- In a month when two library branches are reopening for full service after closing for five years, Santa Monica has made an apt choice for its 2026 Santa Monica Reads program.
The 2020 Japanese novel "What You Are Looking For Is in the Library" will be the focus of citywide events from February 2 to March 14 that include a discussion and book signing by its author Michiko Aoyama.
Established in 2002, the nation’s longest-running community-wide reading program "invites all to read a shared book and connect through discussions and events across the city," library officials said.
Published in English in 2023, Aoyama’s novel is "a love letter to libraries and the transformative power of books" and "features a heartwarming story about five people at crossroads in their lives."
Each one is "quietly guided toward change by their wise neighborhood librarian, Sayuri Komachi," who recommends books that help them find "clarity, purpose and the courage to pursue long-held dreams," program organizers said.
TIME Magazine named "What You Are Looking For Is in the Library" one of the 100 "must-read" books of 2023, calling it "a refreshing and hopeful look at the power of books and the durability of dreams."
Events and discussions include "An Afternoon with Author Michiko Aoyama" on Saturday, February 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, that includes a book signing.
Events also include a Needle Felting Program inspired by the fictional librarian and discussions that encourage readers to share their thoughts about the book.
Director of Library Services Erica Cuyugan called Aoyama’s novel "a charming paean to the power of libraries, friendship, and community, perfect for anyone who has ever felt lost and in need of a guiding light.
“At a moment when libraries across the country are facing mounting challenges and books are being banned, this novel’s celebration of curiosity, connection and the essential role of public libraries feels both timely and vital.
"We hope it inspires conversations about why these institutions matter and how they continue to anchor and empower our communities,” Cuyugan said.
Free copies of “What You Are Looking For Is in the Library,” as well as a resource guide with information about the book, its author and Santa Monica Reads events, are available at all Santa Monica Public Library locations, while supplies last.
Santa Monica Reads is sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library, with additional support from other community and educational partners.
