Pier to Turn into a Classic Drive-In

By Lookout Staff

January 13, 2026 -- The Santa Monica Pier will transform into a 1950s drive-in movie theater during "Locals' Night" on Thursday when Pacific Park presents a screening of "Grease."

Local's Night -- which takes place from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 6;30 -- features a costume contest, live music and DJ sets and a "classic car club setup," event organizers said.Santa Monica Pier Movies

The Pier's first drive-in movie offers an "immersive experience" that allows a limited number of motorists to drive onto the upper Pier deck and watch the movie from their cars parked above the Pacific.

Cars can arrive between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m., with an early arrival recommended for best parking.

"Guests watching from their cars can tune in via a dedicated radio station simulcasting the film’s audio, offering a true retro viewing experience under the stars," organizers said.

Those arriving on foot can bring a blanket and chair, although space will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Guests are encouraged to dress in their best 1950s-inspired attire for a chance to win special Pier prizes during the evening," organizers said.

The free events kick off with "Books & Cookies Musical Storytime," a family-friendly sessions inside the Merry Go-Round Building that take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Before the movie starts, DJs will spin oldies and classic hits from a car-club-style DJ setup on the east side of the Pier deck.

Vintage car enthusiasts will add to the 50s vibe by showcasing their classic wheels, and SAMOHI students will offer acapella performances from 6 p.m. to the start of the screening.

Once the movie starts, guests must remain in place for the full screening and can exit after 8 p.m. when the movie ends.

The first 200 moviegoers will get free popcorn on the house, and bar Service will be available for guests 21 and over.

“This ‘Locals’ Night’ is unlike anything we’ve done before,” said Jim Harris, executive director and historian of the Santa Monica Pier.

“It’s going to be a blast for families, film lovers, and car enthusiasts alike," Harris said. "It’s nostalgic, it’s joyful, and it brings generations together in a way only the Pier can.”

Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis with advance RSVP required. For FREE tickets click here.
