Santa Monica Commemorates Cesar Chavez Day With Closures, Scaled Back Services

By Lookout Staff

March 28,2025 -- City Hall and other public facilities will close on Monday, municipal services will be scaled back or suspended and City programs will be canceled as Santa Monica commemorates Cesar Chavez Day.

In addition to City Hall, the Transit Store and Customer Service, the City Yards Operation Center and the Santa Monica Public Library will be closed for the Federal Holiday, and Big Blue Bus lines will reduce service.

Street sweeping and trash and recycling pickup along with Community Services programs will be suspended on Monday. The Swim Center, the Memorial Park Gym and Fitness Room, the Skate Park, Reed Park's Tennis Office and the Annenberg Beach House will operate on a reduced service schedule.

Parking meters will not be enforced on Monday, except for meters that are enforced daily according to posted signage. Meters that are enforced daily must be paid.

All City beach lots and pay-by-space lots are enforced 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, including Cesar Chavez Day. Preferential Parking (residential/visitor permits) will also be enforced on Monday.

There will be no refuse, recycling, or yard/green waste collection or street sweeping on Monday. Street cleaning regularly scheduled for Monday will take place on Tuesday.

Cesar Chavez Day was proclaimed a national holiday in 2024 to celebrate the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist on March 31 every year.

On March 15, 2022, the City Council designated Cesar Chavez Day and Juneteenth as official City holidays "as part of continued efforts to address systemic barriers to racism and better include, celebrate, and uplift communities of color."

"As a city, we want our holiday observances to reflect our values and celebrate important trailblazers and moments in our collective history,” Mayor Sue Himmelrich said at the time.

Cesar Chavez Day commemorates the union leader's legacy "as a community organizer who improved the lives and working conditions of millions of Latino/a farm workers nationwide," City officials said.

"He dedicated his life to advocating for labor rights, political representation for ethnic minorities, environmental justice, voter registration rights, and improving literacy amongst farm workers."
