June 24, 2025 -- Santa Monica police are investigating the "targeted" shooting of two juveniles inside an autonomous rideshare vehicle in Downtown late Sunday night.
The two victims sustained "non-life-threatening injuries" and were transported to a local hospital for treatment," police said.
"One victim sustained a wound to the arm and the other to the torso," said Lt. Lewis Gilmour, the Police Department spokesperson. "Both are currently in stable condition."
The incident took place near the intersection of 2nd Street and Broadway and "followed a verbal altercation earlier in the evening between the victims and the suspect," Gilmour said.
"At the time of the shooting, the victims were passengers in an autonomous rideshare vehicle when the suspect approached on foot and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle before fleeing the scene," he said.
Preliminary information indicates the shooting was "a targeted and isolated incident," Gilmour said.
SMPD is not releasing the ages of the victims or a description of the suspects "due to the nature of the investigation," Glimour told The Lookout.
"This remains an open and active investigation," he said. "Detectives are reviewing video footage and pursuing all leads."
"Updates will be provided as additional details are confirmed," Gilmour said.
