Santa Monica Wheel to Glow on World Wish Day

By Lookout Staff

April 28, 2025 -- Pacific Park's iconic solar-powered Ferris Wheel on the Pier will join other iconic LA landmarks that will glow a brilliant blue on Tuesday in honor of World Wish Day.

The global celebration is meant to raise awareness "of the life-changing power of a wish" that inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish more than 40 years ago.

"World Wish Day commemorates the very first wish granted in 1980, which sparked a movement that now spans the globe," organizers said.

"This year, the Los Angeles community will come together to shine a light — literally and figuratively — on the magic that happens when children battling critical illnesses are granted their most heartfelt wishes."

Pacific Park, which boast's the world's only solar-powered Ferris Wheel -- will join LA City Hall, the Pylons at LAX and Dodger Stadium -- to mark the celebration.

“Lighting up Los Angeles blue is a powerful visual reminder of the hope, strength, and joy that wishes bring to children and families across our city,” said Aparna Pande, President & CEO of Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles.

“We are a local community organization, and we serve the children of Los Angeles. The funds we raise go directly to granting wishes to local children.

"As a city and a community, we can work together to deliver hope and support our wish kids, their families and their communities,” Pande said.

The Pacific Park Ferris wheel has 174,000 solar-powered LED lights, a lighting system that features 16.7 million color value combinations and display software that presents imaging up to 24 frames per second, park officials said.

“As the Ferris wheel glows over the Pacific Ocean, it serves as a beacon of hope and joy for wish kids and their families," said Nathan Smithson, Pacific Park's director of Marketing and Business Development.

"We’re proud to support this incredible cause and invite our guests to ride with purpose and help make more wishes come true.”

Residents are encouraged to participate by wearing blue, sharing photos of the landmarks on social media using #LightUpLA4Wishes and #WorldWishDay, and donating to help grant more wishes for children in LA.
