October 22, 2024 -- The Police Department on Tuesday released the video of a suspect fleeing after he allegedly assaulted a women in a Downtown Alley last month.

SMPD detectives are "actively investigating" the assault that took place September 22 at 12:35 a.m. near the 1400 block of Alley 5 (5th Court), said Lt. Erika Aklufi, the Police Department spokesperson.

They are seeking the public's help after they "exhausted other methods of identifying the suspect," she said.

The suspect is described as male Black "or Other," 25 to 35 years old with bleach blonde hair, a black beard and tattoos on both biceps and forearms.

The suspect is seen in the video wearing shorts and running barefoot toward the cameras. The video cuts to black and white footage that shows turning and stopping in front of a building.

On the night of the incident, officers responded to a radio call reporting "a physical fight between a male and a female," according to an account posted on SMPD's blog The Blue Notebook.

"The caller stated that the male suspect was on top of the female victim punching her," Aklufi wrote. "The suspect kicked the victim several times and then ran northbound in Alley 5."

The officers located the victim, who refused medical attention and declined to cooperate.

"Despite their best efforts, the victim would not provide any information to officers about herself, the suspect, or the attack," Aklufi wrote.

Officers checked the area but did not find the suspect.

Anyone who recognizes the individual in the video should email Detective Sean Baker at sean.baker@santamonica.gov) or call the Watch Commander at 310-458-8427.

"Public safety remains our top priority and working with the community is essential," Aklufi said.

"We want to remind residents that any information, no matter how small could help get this person into custody and bring justice to the victim."
