November 7, 2024 -- Four traffic-related incidents -- including a collision with a train and a suicide -- were among the notable incidents reported by police during a recent seven-day period.

They were among the 2,486 calls for service that led to 56 arrests between October 26 and November 1, according to The Blue Notebook, the Police Department's weekly blog.

The first traffic related incident took place at the E-Line rail intersection at 14th Street when the driver of a Tesla traveling eastbound on Colorado made an illegal left turn and struck an E-Line train.

"There were no injuries," wrote SMPD spokesperson Lt. Ericka Aklufi. "The Tesla sustained damage rendering it undrivable and the train sustained minor damage to its lead car."

Traffic lanes for eastbound Colorado and northbound 14th Street were closed for a little over an hour as the vehicle was towed and the train continued to 4th Street, Aklufi said.

A second traffic collision, which resulted in injuries and a suidice, took place on the 1400 Block of Cloverfield Boulevard when a pickup truck and a motorcycle collided.

"The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries and was able to move out of the roadway," Aklufi wrote. "The pickup driver pulled over on Cloverfield at the intersection with Schader Drive and stopped."

"When the motorcyclist approached the vehicle, one gunshot was heard. Officers responded to check the scene and confirmed the driver of the truck was deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The coroner responded to the scene, according to the blog post.

In a separate incident, a DUI felony hit and run took place at Ocean and California avenues when the suspect vehicle struck the victim while fleeing from a traffic collision, Aklufi said.

"Officers located the Hit and Run vehicle and detained the occupants," Aklufi wrote. "Evidence from the crime scene matched the suspect vehicle."

The driver was arrested for felony hit and run and driving under the influence.

Another traffic related incident -- this one a traffic stop for multiple equipment violations -- led to a gun arrest, according to the blog.

"A loaded handgun was recovered from one of the occupants," Aklufi wrote. "A second loaded handgun was located behind the stereo."

The four occupants of the vehicle -- two adults and two juveniles -- were arrested, Aklufi said. Both adults were convicted felons.
