July 9, 2023 -- An armed woman barricaded inside a Downtown Santa Monica motel room surrendered to police Sunday evening after a five-hour standoff.

The Police Department issued an advisory at 12:12 p.m. asking the public to avoid the areas of the 1200 Block of Lincoln Boulevard and Arizona Avenue north to 11th Street due to police activity.

"The SMPD is dealing with a person barricaded inside a motel room near the 1200 block of Lincoln," the Department wrote on its Facebook page.

"For the safety of the officers and firefighters securing the scene, please stay out of the area. We are working to peacefully resolve the incident as swiftly as possible."

Another advisory at around 3:07 said all roads between Lincoln and 9th Street from Wilshire to Arizona had been blocked to vehicles and pedestrians.

The occupants of the American Motel at 1243 Lincoln were evacuated as heavily armed police and tactical vehicles remained stationed outside the motel.

A 5 p.m. update announced the standoff had been resolved.

"There were no shots fired," Lt. Erika Aklufi, the Police Department spokesperson, told the Lookout shortly after 5 p.m.

"The standoff has just been resolved with the single occupant of the hotel room surrendering to officers," she said.

The subject will undergo a mental health evaluation, and a police investigation "will determine what charges can be brought," Aklufi said.
