Kevin Aamir Mumin, 36, also is being jointly charged for similar hate crimes targeting Latinos in Los Angeles, where was was arrested by LAPD officers, said Lt. Erika Aklufi, the Police Department spokesperson.
The first Santa Monica incident took place at 1 p.m. Sunday, "when an unidentified male attacked a worker outside a business on Main Street," Aklufi said.
The victim -- who was struck in the back of his head with a large wooden dowel -- suffered a concussion and required stitches, Aklufi said. |
Officers were unable to locate the suspect, and SMPD issued a bulletin for his arrest that was shared with local law enforcement.
On Tuesday, the same suspect assaulted two City of Santa Monica employees, "throwing a glass bottle in their direction," Aklufi said.
He fled before police arrived, she said. Officers determined both incidents were hate-related.
That day, LAPD issued a bulletin for Mumin, "who was responsible for a series of hate crimes targeting Hispanic/Latinos in Los Angeles that closely matched the Santa Monica cases," Aklufi said.
SMPD detectives followed up and identified Mumin as responsible for the Santa Monica incidents, she said.
On Wednesday, officers from LAPD’s 77th Division took Mumin, who is homeless, into custody for crimes committed in Los Angeles.
LAPD contacted SMPD detectives to coordinate filing both cities’ cases jointly with the Los Angeles County District Attorney, Aklufi said.
Mumin faces four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury (GBI), one count of assault likely to produce GBI, a hate crime and a parole violation.
He is being held without bail pending his arraignment.
