By Lookout Staff April 17, 2023 -- A hotel near the Pier and a company that rents shared bikes and scooters have won Santa Monica's top sustainability awards, City officials announced Monday. The Shore Hotel will take home one of two Grand Prizes at the 27th Annual Sustainable Quality Awards for "revolutionizing sustainability within the hospitality industry," officials said.
The other top prize will go to Veo -- one of four shared mobility operators in Santa Monica -- for operating from "a set of values that distinguish them in the industry." “Santa Monica businesses continue to demonstrate that economic vitality, social equity, and environmental protection are mutually beneficial and core components of a thriving local business community,” said Shannon Parry, the City's Chief Sustainability Officer. The Sustainable Quality Awards Grand Prize "is given to businesses that excel in the areas of sustainable economic development, social responsibility, and stewardship of the environment," officials said. The Shore Hotel "is the first and only newly built, sustainable hotel in Santa Monica to be certified Gold with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)," according to the City's website. The hotel is being recognized for having "a comprehensive stance on reducing its carbon footprint" and for leading a special green program that strives "to make a difference in the community and environment." The City also will present two Excellence awards for "outstanding achievements in any one or two of the three categories" recognized by the Grand Prize. OsteoStrong -- an integrative wellness center that focuses on bones, joints, muscles and immunity -- was recognized for Excellence in Social Responsibility and Economic Development. Diana Ralys Skin Health, a wellness spa that offers organic facials and non-invasive treatments, was awarded for Excellence in Stewardship of the Environment. Hosted by the City of Santa Monica in partnership with Sustainable Works, the awards recognize local businesses that "demonstrate excellence in helping Santa Monica continue to move toward a more sustainable future." The annual Sustainable Quality Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Annenberg Community Beach House. Tickets are available online at smsqa.com. |
