Santa Monica Minimum Wage Rises to $15.96
By Lookout Staff
June 30, 2022 -- The minimum wage will increase by nearly a dollar on Friday to $15.96 an hour for all employees physically working in Santa Monica for at least two hours a week.
The local minimum wage also applies to those who work for employers located outside of Santa Monica, City officials said.
For hotel workers, the minimum wage will increase to $18.17 per hour, mirroring the wage hike for hotel workers in Los Angeles, according to City officials.
That wage also applies to contractors providing hotel-related services on hotel premises, including valet, maintenance and cleaning.
In addition, it applies to businesses that "contract, lease and sublet premises and operate in connection with the hotel," such as a restaurant that provides room service to guests, City officials said.
State officials announced last month that the rate will rise to $15.50 an hour for all workers on January 1, 2023.
A number of cities across the state will see their minimum wage increase on Friday.
In Emeryville, which has the nation's highest minimum wage, the rate will increase to $17.68 an hour. In Berkeley and San Francisco, it will rise to $16.99, while in Los Angeles, it will increase to $16.04.
Santa Monica's minimum wage law requires employees working within the City to receive paid sick leave.
Employers with 25 or fewer workers must provide at least 40 hours of paid sick time per year, while those with 26 or more workers must provide at least 72 hours.
Under Santa Monica's minimum wage law, workers are protected from retaliation "if they take action to ensure that employers follow the law.
Workers can sue employers who don’t follow the law, which could lead to "administrative, civil, and criminal enforcement actions," City officials said.
The City has partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs to enforce the local law.
