September 27, 2021 -- Weekly coronavirus cases in Santa Monica dropped to a level not seen since the Delta variant began spreading rapidly across LA County more than two months ago.

There were 56 cases of the virus confirmed in Santa Monica last week, a dramatic drop from 96 cases the previous week, according to LA County Health data released Monday.

It was the lowest weekly tally since 52 cases were reported for the week ending July 7 following a weekly average of 9 cases in June, according to a Lookout analysis of the data.

There were no new coronavirus deaths reported for the second week in a row, after three were reported over the pevious two weeks. Those deaths followed four months without a new virus-related death.

As of Sunday, the County reported a total of 6,493 COVID cases in Santa Monica and 186 virus-related deaths since the first cases was detected in in the city of some 93,000 nearly a year and a half ago.

Santa Monica's decreasing number of cases reflects a countywide trend that saw the 7-day daily case average drop to 1,461 last week, the lowest level since July 14.

There are currently 907 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in LA County, a decrease of 146 patients over the past week and 311 over the past two weeks.

The number includes all patients who tested positive for the virus, regardless of the reason they were hospitalized.

There are approximately 17,000 licensed non-ICU beds and 2,500 licensed ICU beds in the County's 70 designated 9-1-1 receiving hospitals, based on hospitals' daily self-report.

As of Sunday, Public Health had identified 1,455,155 positive cases of COVID-19 and a total of 26,018 deaths in the county of more than 10 million.

Testing results are available for nearly 8,590,000 County residents with 16 percent testing positive, health officials reported. The current positivity rate is 1.1 percent.

As of Thursday, some 6.8 million adults over the age of 12 had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, for a vaccination rate of 77.1 percent.

In Santa Monica, 71,407 residents over the age of 12 were vaccinated, a rate of 84.7 percent, according to County health data.
