Pico Library, Health Program Reopen at Virginia Avenue Park
By Lookout Staff
November 29, 2021 -- Beginning this week, the Santa Monica Public Library Pico Branch will reopen to the public at Virginia Avenue Park, as will the Community Health Program offered by Providence Saint John’s.
Beginning Wednesday, the Library will begin offering in-person services marking "another milestone in Santa Monica’s recovery," City officials said.
Patrons can once again browse the adult and youth collections, pick up library holds, use computers for up to 30 minutes, access study rooms, check out materials and interact with staff, Library officials said.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to reopen our beloved branch in the Pico neighborhood and welcome our patrons back inside the facility,” said Interim Library Director Erica Cuyugan.
“Our team is focused on activating services to meet community needs," Cuyugan said. "It has been heartwarming to see our youth and families come back for safe, in-person programs.”
Limited in-person programming and story time for children and families have been restored at the Main Library and the Pico Branch, officials said.
Operating hours have been expanded to 5 p.m. at the Pico Branch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, as well as on the first Saturday of the month.
"The best way to make the most of your time at the Library is to plan your trip," Library officials said. "Wear a face mask and know the books or resources you’d like to check out or explore."
Also beginning this week, trained community health workers will be available to meet in person with community members as part of Saint John’s Community Health Program.
Every Tuesday starting this week, health workers will offer help with family nutrition and health care access from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Park Center Building in Virginia Avenue Park.
The trained staff "can assist with enrollment in CalFresh, the State of California’s food subsidy program created to improve the nutrition of families through access to healthy foods," City officials said.
"St. John’s staff can also help navigate enrollment or questions for MediCal and Medicare."
Those who wish to check if they qualify for benefits or need help completing enrollment forms, can make an appointment by calling 310.458.8688.
Drop-ins are also welcome. Information about Virginia Avenue Park is available at smgov.net/vapark.
