February 1, 2021 -- A Los Angeles man was arrested for attempted murder late Sunday night after assaulting a man in Downtown Santa Monica, according to police.

Officers responded to an "unknown trouble” call at around 11:21 p.m. near the Expo Light rail line on 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, said Lt. Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesperson.

When officers arrived, they found a male victim "bleeding profusely from his face," Flores said.

"The victim told officers he was punched several times in the face by an unknown individual and strangled to the point that he lost consciousness," he said.

Officers found the suspect -- identified as Bobby Gerald Edwards, 32, of Los Angels -- "a short distance away," Flores said."

Edwards made spontaneous statements tying him to the incident that had just occurred," he said.

"The victim also identified Edwards as the suspect who assaulted him," Flores said. "The victim believed the attack to be unprovoked."

The victim told officers that he was assaulted "when he attempted to engage Edwards who was yelling and appeared to be emotionally distressed.

"During the assault, the suspect attempted to strangulate the victim and yelled, 'I am going to kill you!'" the victim told police.

Edwards grabbed the victim's cell phone and threw it, preventing him from calling 9-1-1, but he was "able to yell for help and police," causing the suspect to stop, Flores said.

Santa Monica Fire Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital.

Edwards was taken into custody and booked for attempted murder and preventing the use of a device to summon for help, Flores said.

Both men provided addresses at local homeless access centers, he said.

Anyone with any information related to this incident should call Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Detective D. Larios at (310) 458-8937 or Police Dispatch at 310-458-8491.
