August 10, 2021 -- The public will get a behind-the-scenes look at Santa Monica College's (SMC) performing arts programs when its Dance and Theatre Arts departments hold virtual open houses next week.

The first open house takes place Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. and offers a chance for the public to find out about SMC's dance program.

The event -- presented free online using the Zoom platform -- allows guests to "meet the faculty, learn about performance opportunities and the Dance major, and sample a variety of dance styles," college officials said.

The Dance Department offers "a comprehensive AA degree in dance rooted in theory and practice that prepares students for BFA and BA transfer and dance related careers, while serving the general student population through a breadth of dance experiences," according to the Department's web page.

Students are taught "through a combination of rigorous technical training in contemporary modern, ballet, commercial, and world dance forms with performance opportunities, theoretical study and creative exploration."

A Zoom link at the August 18 event listing at will be available at event time and take guests directly to the open house.

To attend the event, Zoom software must be installed on the viewer’s computer (free download available at

On Thursday, the Theatre Arts Department takes the stage with an open house from 3 to 4 p.m.

The online event gives guests the chance to "meet some of the faculty, find out about class offerings -- including examples of past classwork -- and performance opportunities, and learn about Theatre Arts degrees and certificates."

The Department brings more than 70 years of experience teaching theatre, acting, and directing, according to its web page.

Its programs "provide many education, training, and career opportunities for performers, as well as for technical and design students.

"Students receive hands-on training in lighting, sound, projection, and costuming while using cutting-edge technology," the web page says. "Student crews cast and run all department productions."
