April 27, 2021 -- A man arrested on Santa Monica beach last July for carrying a loaded firearm was charged on Tuesday with assualting a detention officer in North Carolina, according to a local news report.

Raliegh news station WRAL reported that Jacob Vanderburg -- who was arrested last month after terrorizing hotel guests with a chainsaw -- attacked the officer at the Wake County Detention Center at around 7:30 a.m.

According to the Wake County sheriff's office, Vanderburg "asked an officer for soap," the station reported. "When the officer was attempting to retrieve the soap, Vanderburg hit the officer from behind.

"Several officers arrived seconds later and were able to control Vanderburg," according to the station.

The assault comes nine months after Santa Monica police arrested Vanderburg, 27, on July 23 at the beach in Ocean Park for possession of a loaded firearm and possession of illegal high capacity magazine, according to police.

"He apparently had a firearm holstered on his hip and police received information that he was possibly brandishing the gun," Lt. Joseph Cortez of the SMPD told Patch at the time.

Vanderburg was detained and later arrested after refusing to cooperate with the officers, Cortez said.

"During the officer's investigation, they were unable to find a victim of the brandishing," Cortez said.

"However, the man was in possession of a handgun with a high capacity magazine."

A video posted by ShackedMag showed "a large SMPD presence arrived at the scene including an officer with a riot shield and multiple with assault weapons," according to a report of Venderburg's arrest in Canyon News.

The video then shows Vanderburg standing with his hands above his head as he yells, “I can sit here all day!”

Police ask Vanderburg to kneel, and he briefly obeys before standing and yelling, “I didn’t do anything. Let me go.”

The video then shows police searching Vanderburg’s Black Volkswagen parked on Bernard Way in front of Ocean View Park.

According to Canyon News, "they found multiple knives, an ax, a sleeping bag, a framed degree of some sort, dumbbells, a set of pots and pans, and various other household items."

Cortez said that officers speaking with the subject "became concerned about his mental health," Patch reported. "The officer placed the man on a mental evaluation hold, pursuant to 5150 WIC."

The law applies to a person who "as a result of a mental health disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled."

Last month police in Raleigh said Vanderburg "threatened people with a chainsaw at Red Roof Inn, a Super 8 and a Claremont Inn," according to WRAL.

Vanderburg was charged with second degree kidnapping, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, going armed to the terror of the public, four counts of injury to real property, felony larceny of a firearm, and disorderly conduct, the station reported.
