May 22, 2020 -- (UPDATED) A man was shot and injured during a reported burglary at an empty property in an upscale North of Montana Neighborhood Thursday night, Santa Monica police said.

Officers responded to to a call reporting a burglary in progress on the 400 block of 10th Street at around 8 p.m., said Lt. Joseph Cortez, the Police Departments spokesman.

"Upon arrival, officers locate a male white subject in his 30s down to the rear of the property with a gunshot wound to the neck," Cortez said.

The individual was immediately transported to the UCLA-Westwood Hospital in critical condition, he said.

"The unidentified man underwent surgery and is reported to be in stable condition," Cortez said in an update at noon Friday.

The person responsible for the shooting was a male Asian in his 70s and the witness was a male Asian in his 60s, according to police officers who spoke with the men.

They are the executors of the estate where the shooting took place, Cortez said.

"The men had arrived at the untenanted property to prepare it for a sale when they located the male white subject inside the property," he said.

Detectives from the Santa Monica Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit arrived at the scene and are investigating the incident, he said.
