January 23, 2020 -- Charges were filed Wednesday against a man who reportedly tossed Molotov cocktails onto several Santa Monica streets last weekend, police said.

Korie Paul Schmidt was charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney with two counts of possessing a destructive device with the intent to destroy property.

He also faces seven counts of possessing a destructive device and one count of possessing destructive device materials, according to police.

Over the weekend, police began receiving reports that a man was tossing what appeared to be Molotov cocktails onto the streets of Santa Monica Boulevard and Pico Boulevard from his car.

"On Sunday, officers spotted a car matching the description in the area of Centinela (Anue) and Pico," said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the Police Department spokesperson.

"A traffic stop was conducted and evidence was found inside the vehicle that tied the subject and this vehicle to the suspect who was seen throwing Molotov cocktails," she said.

The Los Angeles Sheriffs Department Bomb Squad was notified and after inspecting the "disheveled" car found it to be safe.

On Wednesday, SMPD Arson Investigators presented the case to the Target Crimes Division at the Criminal Courts in LA and prosecutors filed charges later that day.

"There was speculation that the suspect was targeting McDonalds because the devices were thrown in the area of the fast food restaurant," Cobarrubias said.

"There is no correlation between the two."
