The incident took place on the 400 block of Broadway at 12:22 a.m., police said.

"Eyewitnesses had observed the suspect punching and kicking the victim multiple times in the head/face area," Cobarrubias said.

"Another witness observed the suspect use a shovel to strike the victim," she said.

"When officers arrived on scene, the victim was unconscious with severe facial and head trauma."

The victim was transported to the local hospital, where he is expected to survive, police said.
