September 16, 2019 -- Santa Monica police made four DUI arrests at a checkpoint Friday to screen for motorists driving under the influence, officials said Monday.

A total of 775 vehicles drove through the checkpoint, which took place Friday from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on the 2300 to 2500 block of Ocean Park Boulevard.

Of those, 287 vehicles were screened and sobriety tests were given to 12 drivers, said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the Police Department spokesperson.

Two drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for driving under the influence of drugs and one for a driving with a combination of both substances in their system.

In addition, two motorists were cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license, police said. Three vehicles were impounded.

Three other checkpoints conducted by Santa Monica police this year have netted similar results.

Friday's checkpoint was the 15th since 2016 and the second in less than three weeks.

A total of 14,669 vehicles were screened before Friday's checkpoint, resulting in contacts with a total of 4,996 drivers, Cobarrubias said.

Forty one arrests were for operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Since 2016, officers have investigated 250 DUI collisions and made 276 DUI related arrests, Cobarrubias said.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses, police officials said.
