October 3, 2019 -- An armed suspect remains at large after attempting to rob a couple sitting in their car on Montana Avenue Wednesday night, police said.

The attempted armed robbery took place at around 7:50 p.m. near the corner of 21st Street and Montana Avenue, said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the police department spokesperson.

The victims described the suspect as a white male in his late 20s wearing a dark hoodie, black shorts and white shoes.

"The victims were sitting in their car when they were approached," Cobarrubias said. "The suspect pointed a handgun at them and demanded money."

When the victims saw what they believed to be a weapon, they drove off in their vehicle to a safe area and called the police, she said.

Officers responded and set up "a large perimeter" from 20th to 23rd streets and Montana to Carlyle Avenue, three blocks north of the commercial strip, police said.

The Los Angeles Police Department's airship was deployed to "obtain an overhead visual for the suspect," Cobarrubias said.

"We received word the suspect may have jumped into a vehicle of some sort and was last seen driving westbound on Montana from the area," she said.

"The search was called off at that point."

Detectives conducted a follow up Thursday and were looking for cameras that may have captured the suspect’s actions and vehicle, Cobarrubias said.

Wednesday night's incident marked the third involving an armed robber on the upscale street in the past two months.

Last month, a robber wearing a Day of the Dead mask held up a bank on the 900 block of Montana Avenue and remains at large ("Santa Monica Bank Robber at Large After Extensive Police Search," September 10, 2019).

The robbery garnered national attention after Yahoo! repeated a false report in a local paper that the suspect was wanted for cultural appropriation ("Yahoo! Removes Story Based on Santa Monica Paper's 'Satirical Post,'" September 18, 2019).

In August, police arrested four suspects in an attempted robbery at Heist Jewelry in the 1200 block of Montana ("Suspects Arrested in Two Separate Santa Monica Robberies Thursday and Friday," August 16, 2019).

Footage captured by the store security camera shows a masked man storming into the store and smashing a display case with a sledge hammer before the store manager tosses him out.
