By Jorge Casuso November 21, 2019 -- A man committed suicide shortly before dawn Thursday by hanging himself underneath the Santa Monica Pier, according to police. The man's body was found around 6 a.m. on the southside of the pier by the waterline, said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias. "We determined there to be no evidence of foul play," Cobarrubias said. There is no information on the victim, and the cause of death is being determined by the Los Angles County Coroner's office, police said. On March 9, 2018, a man committed suicide by jumping into the ocean from the century-old wooden structure that attracts more than 6 million visitors a year. Several witnesses saw the man disrobe and perform a ritual before disappearing into the water shortly before midnight on March 9. The suicide came less than one month after another man jumped to his death from the pier on February 18. Santa Monica made headlines over the past year for a string of suicides committed in its Downtown public parking structures. Since September 2018 four persons took their lives by leaping from the roofs of the structures. A search of the internet by the Lookout found few reports of suicides in California committed by leaping from parking structures. In June 2018, a John Adams Middle School (JAMS) parent took his life with a firearm in front of the school ("Parent of Santa Monica Student Commits Suicide in Front of School," June 25, 2018). |
