By Jorge Casuso November 4, 2019 -- A Santa Monica man suspected of killing a woman a Morena Valley home last Wednesday committed suicide shortly after the slaying, local sheriff's deputies said Monday. The body of the suspect, identified as Aravon McCalla, 36, was found in the hills above Reche Canyon Road in Loma Linda at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after having died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to reports. The victim, identified as Ruth Cortes, 40, of Portsmouth, Virginia, was found dead in the driveway of the residence in Loma Lina by police who were responding to reports of shots fired, said Sgt. Ken Thurm of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Thurm said. Thurm initially reported that the suspect had been identified by police but "had not yet been located or apprehended." The report posted by City News Group added that sheriff's deputies did not believe he posed "any threat to the public at this time.'" According to information on several online directories, McCalla lived in a furnished studio in Downtown Santa Monica. His last address listed, however, was in Seattle, Washington. Anyone with information should call Central Homicide Investigator Barajas at (951) 955-2777, or Moreno Valley Station Investigator Allen at (951) 486-6700.
