May 3, 2019 -- Super heroes and heroines will seize the day Saturday as the Santa Monica Public Library holds its third annual Free Comic Book Day celebration.

The library will join thousands of comic book shops around the world that since 2002 have given away millions of comic books on the first Saturday in May, organizers said.

The comic books will be given away as long as supplies last at the Main Library Downtown, as well as at the four branches scattered across the city.

The Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, will also host events celebrating the art of comics.

The celebration starts at 10:30 a.m. with the half-hour "Superhero Story Time," which includes stories and songs featuring favorite comic book heroes and heroines.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the library's main lobby will host 12 activity stations that offer comic book fans the chance to make superhero slime and comic book coasters and experience lightsaber virtual reality (for thos at least 13 years old), as well as other fun activities.

The library is encouraging participants to dress as comic book characters.

Following will be a screening at 1 p.m. of the 2018 animated feature "Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse," the first non-Disney or Pixar film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature since 2011.

The movie tells the story of Mike Morales, a teen who "gets bitten by a spider, gains superpowers, and crosses paths with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat to all realities," organizers said.

The day concludes with a Cosplay Contest at Hi De Ho Comics, 412 Broadway, which is co-sponsoring the celebration.

The cosplay contest -- where participants wear a character's costume and fashion accessories -- will take place from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Hi De Ho will give away more free comics and offer a chance to meet comic book creators, organizers said.
