March 15, 2019 -- Works in a wide range of genres will be featured in the upcoming issue of Santa Monica Review, the only nationally distributed literary magazine published by a U.S. community college.

The works -- which "reflect varieties of creative engagement in storytelling in both fiction and nonfiction" -- will be showcased at a launch party Sunday, March 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"As we enter our fourth decade, I’m proud that SMC has maintained its commitment to the journal and its writers," said Andrew Tonkovich, the Review's editor.

Many writers with work in the Review have developed projects that became books and their work consistently appears in prestigious annual anthologies, including Pushcart Prize, Best American Short Stories and PEN/O. Henry, Tonkovich said.

The launch party opens with a welcome by reviewer, editor and LA literary arts booster David Kipen (Dear Los Angeles), and features readings by journalist Erik Kongshaug, poet Kareem Tayyar, novelist Marilyn Manolakas and short story writer Suzanne Greenberg.

The spring issue also showcases the work of seven other established authors and emerging writers "focusing on narratives of the West Coast," event organizers said.

The issue includes another installment of Vicki Forman's novel-in-progress, "This Lovely Life," as well as new work from frequent contributors Gary Amdahl, James Warner and Geoff Wyss.

There is also a "domestic dream-narrative" by Orange County teacher Erik Rangno, a "tale of exile and arrival" by award–winning poet and novelist Kareem Tayyar and a "hilarious pitch-perfect satire" by Matt Greene.

In addition, Santa Monica College workshop veteran Erica Lansdown "offers episodes in the life of a surfing girl."

Tonkovich thanked SMC's ongoing support in issuing and promoting the review, which was founded by SMC creative writing instructor Jim Krusoe, author of the acclaimed novels "Parsifal" and "The Sleep Garden."

He signaled the school's role in "supporting its presence at the LA Times Festival of Books and other community gatherings, distributing the magazine nationally, and sharing this great literary resource with other colleges, universities, and writing workshops.”

Santa Monica Review is available for purchase online (smc.edu/sm_review) and at the SMC Campus Store, Beyond Baroque in Venice, and other area booksellers.

Copies are also available by mail and by subscription through Santa Monica Review, Santa Monica College, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica 90405.

The publication costs $7 per issue or $12 for the two issues each year. For more information, visit the Santa Monica Review website (smc.edu/sm_review) or call 949-235-8193.
