March 12, 2019 -- On Sunday, March 24, Santa Monica will once again be the finish line for the Los Angeles Marathon and that means a boon for local businesses and, for residents, finding different ways of getting around town. To help residents negotiate the street closures and find alternate routes on race day -- which is expected to bring some 20,000 runners and thousands more spectators to the last three-mile stretch -- the City is providing maps, schedules and handy tips on its website.
The City "aims to create a safe, friendly atmosphere for all visitors while reducing the impacts on residents," officials said this week. "Taking public transit or riding your bike on the day of the marathon is a great way to help reduce traffic." Starting at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, eastbound San Vicente Boulevard and parts of Ocean Avenue along the race route will close, with most other downtown street closures taking place at 6 a.m. "Santa Monica Police Officers will reopen the streets after the majority of the race participants have finished," City officials said. On race day, San Vicente Boulevard will be closed to eastbound traffic along its entire length -- from 26th Street to Ocean Avenue. No vehicles will be allowed to cross the boulevard during the closure. Westbound travel will be maintained with left turn restrictions. Ocean Avenue between Montana Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard will be closed to both northbound and southbound traffic. Temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted along Ocean with the restrictions and impounding will begin at 9 p.m. Ocean Avenue will also be closed to both northbound and southbound traffic from San Vicente to Moomat Ahiko Way near the Pier. No vehicles will be allowed to enter Ocean Avenue from the westbound direction for the duration of the closure, which begins at midnight. "All streets, alleys, and driveways that intersect any portion of the race course will be closed to all traffic," officials said. "For those buildings directly abutting the race only pedestrian access along the sidewalk will be allowed. "Side streets and alleys will remain open for vehicle access to garages and/or pedestrian access to alternate building entrances, if available. On-street parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on side streets." For additional closures see map. City officials anticipate most of San Vicente Boulevard will be completely reopened by 4 p.m., while Ocean Avenue between San Vicente and Moomat Ahiko Way will open at approximately 6 p.m. Ocean Avenue between Washington Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard will remain closed until 9 p.m., officials said. This is the tenth year that the final leg of the 26.2-mile race dubbed “The Stadium to the Sea” that begins at Dodgers Stadium and ends in Santa Monica. The previous 24 LA Marathon races took place exclusively in the City of Los Angeles. |
