February 20, 2019 -- A 42-year-old man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in the fatal stabbing of his mother and the stabbing of his father in their Sunset Park home last month.

Stephen Lloyd Fader of Brentwood pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of murder and attempted murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

He faces a possible maximum sentence of 32 years to life in state prison, said DA spokesman Ricardo Santiago. Bail is set at $3 million.

The charges include special allegations that Fader used a knife as a deadly and dangerous weapon and that he inflicted great bodily injury upon his father who is older than 70 years old, said Deputy District Attorney Morgan Mallory.

Howard Fader, 82, and Sharon Fader, 75, were stabbed multiple times on or between January 23 and 24, according to the criminal complaint.

Sharon Fader was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

Both the suspect and his father were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for stab wounds, police said.

The stabbings took place inside a single-family home in the 1200 block of Sunset Avenue ("Woman Fatally Stabbed in Sunset Park, Son in Custody," January 24, 2019).

The defendant is scheduled to return to Los Angeles County Superior Court on on March 11.

The case remains under investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department.
