August 6, 2019 -- A man arrested for murder by Santa Monica police after a tense standoff in 2015 was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years to life in state prison.

David Carrillo, 33, of Los Angeles was found guilty on May 21, of one count of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of Wesley Morejon, 30, outside Los Angeles fast-food restaurant on February 10, 2015.

Prosecutors had sought a first-degree murder conviction but the jury found Carrillo guilty of the lesser charge and a special circumstance that he used a folding knife during the crime, County officials said.

The evidence presented at the trial showed the victim and the defendant knew each other from a substance abuse program they both attended.

The two men were arguing before Carrillo stabbed the victim and fled the scene.

Interviews with witnesses and video surveillance footage enabled investigators to identify Carrillo as the prime suspect in the attack, officials said at the time.

Nearly two weeks later, on February 23, detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department traced Carrillo to a residence in the 800 block of Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica.

Carrillo refused to surrender, leading to a five-hour standoff with Santa Monica police and a sheriff’s SWAT Team that captured the media spotlight.

Carrillo exited the residence after deputies shot tear inside, but he re-entered and was captured by the deputies using a K-9.

Carrillo was treated for dog bites and placed under arrest.
