August 2, 2019 -- Learn to dance salsa, catch a comedy show or just lounge on some of the new "interactive" seating that's part of Downtown Santa Monica's outdoor laboratory on the Third Street Promenade this summer.

Presented by Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. (DTSM), “The Experiment,” which takes place August 11 through September 30, will test what makes a public space vibrant, Downtown officials said.

“The Experiment Stage is just one of the ways we hope everyone is able to enjoy and discover the Third Street Promenade as an active and welcoming community space,” said Mackenzie Carter, DTSM's director of marketing and communications.

“The activities offered are for all ages and our goal is to provide increased opportunities for our residents, neighbors and visitors of Santa Monica to come together through engaging programming while helping shape the next generation of the Promenade’s legacy.”

"The Experiment," which was first introduced last September, kicks off with a jolt on Sunday, August 11 with Shimmy and Salsa Sundays on The Experiment Stage on the Promenade just south of Wilshire Boulevard.

The "high-energy classes from noon to 1 p.m. are "loaded with good music and lots of laughs," event organizers said.

Then from 4 to 6 p.m. learn salsa moves with free dance lessons before hitting the dance floor for a night of dancing under the stars with Salsa Familia.

The Experiment continues daily with thematic performances and interactive events spanning group fitness classes, family fun nights, comedy shows, live bands, guest lectures and more.

"The events will be designed for everyone to enjoy from adults looking for a night out or a family with kids and teens in tow," Downtown officials said.

The programming introduces "new elements to serve the next generation of residents and visitors amid the ever-evolving retail environment of Third Street Promenade."

The schedule features Kid Fit on Mondays (except Labor Day), Trivia Tuesday, Work it Wednesdays, Laugh Out Loud on Thursdays and Fridays with Family.

Saturdays at 8 p.m., Heard That features live music from some of the area’s hottest bands -- funk, rock, bluegrass and other genres.

For more information and the full schedule of events visit DTSM's events calendar.
