April 3, 2019 -- If you have broken jewelry, a computer that won't turn on or a wobbly chair leg, the City can help you fix it on Saturday free of charge.

The Repair Cafe -- which takes place from noon to 4 p.m. at the Camera Obscura Art Lab in Palisades Park -- connects "community members who have broken household items with volunteers who demonstrate repairs," City officials said.

"Participants will share community skills, reduce waste, and have fun in the process," officials said in announcing the event.

"Although it’s fun to DIY (do it yourself,) it’s even better to do it together with your community!"

For those needing to repair their bikes, a guest mechanic from the Santa Monica Bike Center will be there to help.

Those wanting to start an organic garden can take part in a seed exchange workshop with Christy the GardenNerd, who offers classes, consulting, food garden design and installation and vegetable garden maintenance services.

Librarian Kelly Wortham of the Santa Monica Public Library will offer practical advice on 3D printing and replacement parts.

"Repair Café empowers the community to regain skills that are becoming lost in a disposable society," organizers said.

"The skills developed and relationships fostered during these events not only help sustain the planet, but on a local level, help build sustainable neighborhoods."

The Repair Cafe is part of the City's Zero Waste Strategic Plan, which calls for 95 percent of Santa Monica's waste to be diverted from landfills by 2030.

"Since household waste is a considerable portion of landfill usage, the items that Repair Café fixes helps toward achieving this important goal," officials said.

Westside Repair Café is presented in partnership with Our Time Bank, Transition Culver City, Santa Monica Bike Center, Santa Monica Resource Recovery & Recycling, the Santa Monica Library, and Santa Monica Cultural Affairs.

The free event is open to the public.
