Parent of Santa Monica Student Commits Suicide in Front of School

June 25, 2018 -- A John Adams Middle School (JAMS) parent took his life in front of the school Saturday, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) officials said.

The man used a firearm, officials said. No other person was injured.

"We are devastated by this loss of a community member and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends," District Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati said in a statement issued Saturday.

"I want to reassure you that this was an isolated incident and that other than the deceased no other person(s) were in harms way or injured."

District officials declined to comment further on the incident.

Security and safety protocols are in place at all District campuses when school is in session, Drati said.

"We are also continuously working with Santa Monica and Malibu authorities in evaluating our safety protocols for improvement," Drati said.

The District provides resources on its health services page and encourages anyone seeking more information to call the District office for support.

"The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and we continue to work with local law enforcement officials and mental health professionals to address concerns our students and families are dealing with," Drati said.
