June 18, 2018 -- Community members raised more than $125,000 for the Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL) at the annual PAL Charity Golf Classic last week, club officials said. A total of 146 golfers participated in the 9th annual tournament June 11 at the MountatinGate Country Club in Los Angeles, officials said. The winning team was composed of Gerry Leyva, Jose Rodriguez, and Ricky Verbeck. “We are incredibly grateful to the Santa Monica community and police officers that join us each year to support PAL and Santa Monica youth,” said Eula Fritz, director of Santa Monica PAL. “While it’s a day of fun, the benefits from everyone’s generosity are felt throughout the year in the educational, healthy living, and arts enrichment and physical fitness components of our program.” The money raised by the tournament will be used to "assist the advancement of PAL programs in Santa Monica," officials said. The programs -- which are free for Santa Monica youth -- help youngsters between the ages of 6 and 17 "establish self-esteem and reach their full potential," officials said. PAL's educational programs include homework assistance, university/college tours, SAT Prep classes and post- high school scholarships through the Chris Carrey PAL Education Fund. The charitable funds raised by the 9th Annual PAL Charity Golf Classic were made possible through entry fees collected, donations, silent auction proceeds and tournament supporters, officials said.
