May 17, 2017 -- Santa Monica police are searching for two suspects in the severe beating of a man during a possible home invasion robbery Monday in the North of Montana Neighborhood.
The incident took place on the 500 block of 17th Street at approximately 3 p.m., said Lt. Saul Rodriguez, the Police Department spokesman.
The victim, who was in his 60s, was "assaulted pretty severely" and treated by paramedics at the scene, he said. He was taken to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition.
"Due to the sensitivity of the investigation and condition of the victim, no additional information may be released at this time," Rodriguez said.
Police are investigating the incident as a possible home invasion robbery, he added.
The Police Department issued a community alert on Tuesday that said it "will immediately be deploying additional officers in the community to address your safety concerns.
"We encourage all residents to remain vigilant and call the police if you see something or someone suspicious," the alert said.
Residents of the North of Montana Neighborhood have become increasingly vocal about what they characterize as an increase in crime after the arrival of the Expo light rail in Santa Monica a year ago.
Rodriguez said crime has increased across Los Angeles County and cautioned that summer usually sees a hike in criminal activity.
"We are doing what we can to prevent any additional spikes," he told The Lookout.
