Santa Monica Ranked Among Top Cities for Online Art Buyers

July 31, 2017 -- While Santa Monica boasts a thriving gallery scene at Bergamot station, residents of the beach city also seem to be purchasing art online at a higher rate than their counterparts in other cities, according to Marketplace Artfinder.
The Miami-based company, which claims to be the world’s largest marketplace for original art, ranked Santa Monica ninth among the cities with the greatest number of buyers per capita, ahead of New York and LA.
“Our data shows that the whole of the US is busy buying original art for their homes, but also that people in smaller cities and more rural areas are more likely to buy art than New Yorkers," said Jonas Almgren, Artfinder’s CEO.
According to the data, Santa Monica's per capita rate was 578 artworks bought per million inhabitants in 2016.
That placed it at number 9 in the top 10, just below Austin (592) and ahead of Boston (572).
The top ranked city was Tallahassee, Florida (1,303), followed by New Haven, Connecticut (953); Anaheim (842); Tampa (789); Raleigh, North Carolina (770); San Francisco (726) and Miami (620).
“We are now seeing a new generation and a new kind of art buyer emerging," Almgren said. "Our audience are typically younger than those who buy from galleries.
"They don’t necessarily classify themselves as ‘collectors,’" he said. "They’re not buying for investment, they’re buying because they want something handmade by a real person on their wall, something no-one else has got.”
The five cities with the fewest online art buyers per capita were Humble, Texas; Lagrange, Georgia; Madison Heights, Michigan; Bremerton, Washington, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Founded in 2013, Artfinder sells original art from 10,000 artists in 113 countries, company officials said. It currently has 600,000 subscribers.
