July 6, 2017 -- Those who have wondered what it takes to play a ukulele, grow an organic plant or twirl a hula hoop can learn to do all of these when Santa Monica celebrates Park and Recreation Month in July.

Those are among the activities featured during the City's How To Festival on July 22, one of nearly a dozen events for residents of all ages and abilities that include outdoor musical performances and movies, Zumba and samba classes, soccer clinics and a community picnic day.

An initiative of the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), Park and Recreation Month celebrates "all the ways parks and recreation has the power to transform our daily lives and wellbeing," Santa Monica officials said.

"From providing places to play, get fit and stay healthy, to fostering new relationships and forging a connection with nature, Santa Monica’s close-to-home community park and recreation facilities provide essential services and improve quality of life."

The celebration, which kicked off July 1 with a Lego Building contest at Reed Park, continue July 12 with two separate of events -- Drop In Ultimate Frisbee at the Annenberg Community Beach House and Family Movie Night at Reed Park.

One of the most popular events ids the How To Festival, which includes lessons in everything from how to make a hat from recycled materials and how to Lindy Hop to how to play tennis and how to play the ukulele in a day.

The celebration culminates with an A Capella Concert July 29 at Reed Park.
During Park and Recreation Month, the City also is offering a photo contest for community members who share a photo of their favorite park, park amenity or park activity using the hashtag #SaMoParks.

"A weekly winner will be chosen based on the most likes received and winners announced on the following Monday with prizes to be awarded," officials said. "In addition, an overall winner will be chosen from the weekly winner submittals."

This year marks the 32nd anniversary of National Park and Recreation Month. For more information on this month's events visit
