July 30, 2013 -- Disaster was averted early Monday morning when Santa Monica's fire department put out a kitchen fire at a popular sports bar on the Promenade before it spread to other buildings.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Santa Monica firefighters were dispatched to the bar and restaurant, Yankee Doodles, just south of Santa Monica Boulevard at 1410 Third Street Promenade.

“Units battled a fire in the kitchen and roof of the Yankee Doodles sports bar and grill under the command of Battalion Chief Carl Bjerke,” said Jose Torres, division chief with the Santa Monica Fire Department.

“The fire was contained to the restaurant with no other businesses suffering damage,” he said.

While the firefighters were able to contain the fire within the first 15 minutes of their arrival, they fought the fire until about 7 a.m.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown, but authorities believe that it may have started in the kitchen and spread, feeding off of grease in the restaurant's ducts.

“Fire units from the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Culver City Fire Department were requested to assist,” Torres said.

“No injuries were reported,” he said, adding that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Authorities said that they will have to determine whether the building is still structurally sound before they can say when the restaurant can reopen for business.
