July 18, 2013 – Multiple Grammy Award nominee Meshell Ndegeocello – who incorporates multiple genres with danceable results – will headline the Twilight Concert Series Thursday night on the Santa Monica Pier.

The American singer-songwriter, rapper and bassist mixes up jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, R&B, and rock to spur what has been dubbed neo-soul.

The resulting recordings have been nominated for ten Grammys, and her cover version of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night” with John Mellencamp peaked at number three on the Billboard charts.

Her music also has been featured in a dozen film soundtracks including “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “The Best Man,” “Lost & Delirious” and Tyler Perry’s “Daddy’s Little Girls.”

Ndegeocello’s upcoming studio album – her tenth – “Pour une âme souveraine” (“For a sovereign soul”) is a dedication to fellow musician Nina Simone.

The album – which is comprised of a mix of traditional classics and songs written by or for Simone – reflects Ndegeocello’s “admiration for the pioneering work of an artist who refused to be owned by genre, industry, or expectation,” concert organizers said.

“She wanted success, was pressured to make hits, but her own sound was still irrepressible,” Ndegeocello said. “She had things to say, she protested. She was a loud, proud black, female voice during a time when black female voices were not encouraged to make themselves heard.”

The Los Feliz roots/blues/rock trio The Record Company – whose sound is steeping inclassic electric blues – will be the opening act.

The Thursday night concerts will be emceed by DJs from 89.9 FM KCRW, the media partner for the Twilight Concert Series.

Concertgoers are encouraged to take the Big Blue Bus. Parking will be available in the lot north of the pier at 1550 Pacific Coast Highway, however parking on the Santa Monica Pier deck will be closed.

The City of Santa Monica will provide a free bike valet, stationed on the beach next to the bicycle path on the south side of the pier.
