July 15, 2013 -- Heeding the adage that you can’t always judge a book by its cover, the Santa Monica Public Library is offering readers a chance to discover exciting new reads.

"Blind Date with a Book" – on display in the lobby of the Main Library -- conceals the identity of the books by wrapping them in plain paper. Readers are only given a few descriptive lines on the front to decide whether to give the book a chance.

“Besides simplifying and putting a little mystery and fun into the book selection process the display encourages discovery of new authors or genres,” said Denise Nunez, the public services librarian.

Like any blind date, the result could be exciting, or disappointing, but it’s likely to offer something other than what you normally would go for based on the title or cover.

"Blind Date with a Book" -- which is rapidly becoming a nationwide trend -- is part of the Library's first Adult Summer Reading Program with the theme of "Groundbreaking Reads."

“Children have long enjoyed the fun and benefits of the Summer Reading Program and this year the Library is delighted to offer all members of the family a summer reading experience,” library officials said.

The Adult Summer Reading Program – which is made possible through the generous support from the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library and The Broad Stage -- includes author talks, book discussions and film screenings.

There are also possible prizes from those who submit a completed Groundbreaking Reads form, available at any Santa Monica Public Library, by August 17.

All Adult Summer Reading events are free and open to the public. Seating is limited and on a first arrival basis. The Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For special disabled services, call Library Administration at (310) 458-8606 at least one week prior to event.
