July 2, 2013 – The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is looking for volunteers to serve on advisory boards that address everything form health and safety to the arts.

Completed applications to serve on the five committees are due to the district office no later than July 31, and the School Board is scheduled to make appointments to the 45 vacancies in August. Membership terms range from one to four years.

There are 10 spots open on the Early Child Care and Development Committee, five on the Health and Safety Committee, seven on the Intercultural Equity and Excellence Committee, eight on Special Education Committee and five on the Visual and Performing Arts Committee.

“District advisory committees provide a method whereby citizens and educators can understand better the attitudes and opinions that are held in the school-community environment,” District officials said.

Unlike the School Board, advisory committees do not set policy or manage or direct the schools. Instead, advisory committees “inquire, inform, suggest, (and) recommend,” District officials said.

The committees are intended to improve communication and understanding so the District can “move in the direction of clearly demonstrated needs and desires of the community to be served,” officials said.

All committee members are expected to focus on student learning and achievement, advocate for public education and “respect differences of perspective and style on the committee and among staff, students, parents, and the community,” officials said.

They also must conduct themselves in a “dignified and professional manner, treating everyone with civility and respect.”
