September 21, 2012 -- You can get 130 feet closer for an unobstructed view of Space shuttle Endeavour as it makes its final fly over Los Angeles late Friday morning during a free ride on Pacific Park's Ferris wheel.

The shuttle arrived piggy-back above a jumbo jet at Edwards Airforce Base on Thursday and will depart Friday for the space shuttle fleet's final journey when it heads to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Santa Monicans will get a clear view of the 75-ton winged spacecraft as it heads to the nearby landing strip, where it will be readied for its move through city streets to its final destination at the California Science Center in Downtown Los Angeles.

But perhaps the clearest views will be from Pacific Park’s Ferris wheel, which will offer free rides from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. To enjoy the free ride, go to go to the Pacific Wheel entrance and enter the queue line, and Pacific Park will provide a 3 to 5- minute complimentary ride.

"Depending on the space shuttle’s arrival time, some fortunate guests will be on the Ferris wheel to experience the event up close" Pacific Park officials said.

Soaring 130 feet above the ocean, the Pacific Wheel is the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel, featuring 160,000 energy-efficient LED lights that present "dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment each evening," park officials said.

The eco-friendly, enhanced LED lighting provides 75 percent greater energy savings than most Ferris wheel’s traditional incandescent bulbs.

LA’s only admission-free amusement park, Pacific Park offers 12 amusement rides, 18 midway games and an oceanfront food plaza. Prices and operating hours are subject to change.
