Santa Monica Police on Lookout for Motorists Running Red Lights

By Lookout Staff

September 4, 2012 -- In an effort to reduce traffic collisions, Santa Monica police will be keeping an eye out for vehicles that fail to stop at a red light this month.

According to the California Vehicle Code drivers facing a steady red light or red arrow signal must stop at a marked limit line, or if there is none, before entering the crosswalk or before entering the intersection, and remain stopped.

Unless there is a sign prohibiting a turn, drivers facing a red light may turn right, or left from a one-way street onto a one-way street after yielding to pedestrians or another vehicle approaching closely.

A pedestrian facing a steady circular red or red arrow signal shall not enter the roadway.

Every month in 2012, the Santa Monica Police Department has targeted driving behaviors that are leading causes of accidents, including speeding, pedestrian awareness and tailgating.

For more information, please contact Sergeant Phillbo Rubish with the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit at 310.458.8950.
