Student's Tragic Death Shocks Santa Monica

By Lookout Staff

January 18, 2011 -- Onlookers were shocked Friday afternoon when Santa Monica High School student Matthew Mezza fell from an upper floor of the Sheraton Delfina Hotel.

Mezza ran off the high school baseball field during practice and into the hotel across the street, school officials told news outlets.

Police, who were called to the scene at 5:22 p.m., say they found a juvenile who had jumped from the hotel's tenth floor, Sergeant Jay Trisler of the Santa Monica Police Department said.

No reports indicate why Mezza jumped or fell, and friends and relatives are said to be in stunned disbelief.

The school district is conducting an investigation but no information is forthcoming immediately as its offices are closed for the Martin Luther King Holiday.

School Principal Hugo A. Pedroza notified parents in an email that grief counseling will be available in the SAMOHI library when students return to school Tuesday.

He asked teachers, staff and parents to show “patience and flexibility” towards students following the tragedy.
