|Santa Monica High School Bands Strut Their Stuff|
By Lookout Staff
January 12, 2011 -- Parents and friends will get to hear the culmination long years of hard practice when award-winning SAMOHI band musicians perform Friday night.
The professional sound will be a real treat for families who've followed their children since their first tootles and blats in elementary school concerts.
The performing ensembles feature 21 players who've just been accepted into Southern California and All-State Honor groups, more than were chosen from any other high school in California.
They'll play a mix of modern and contemporary music ranging from Dmitri Schostakovich and circus bandleader Karl L. King to young composers Steven Reineke, the newly appointed Music Director of the New York Pops, and John Mackey who creates music for the dance.
The concert will close with a “thrilling surround-sound finale” by all bands playing together – the Samohi Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, Concert Winds, and Viking Marching Band.
The show starts at 7p.m. Friday, January 14 in Barnum Hall on the SAMOHI campus.
Tickets run from five to ten dollars, with proceeds going to support high school band programs.
Parking is free at SAMOHI's north lot off of Olympic Boulevard.
